The Art of English – Reading

Publié le 28 Octobre 2018

eading is not what it is believed to be… merely mastering the art of putting together letters into words and making sense of it… both vocabulary and grammar, or even pronunciation and meaning…

Students drag their feet when it comes to reading… as kids and youngsters shy away from reading… and it doesn’t only happen in your English classroom…

One of my bosses at university once panicked and broke out into ‘They don’t read… they don’t read !’ to which I answered ‘They don’t read, they chat !!! And that’s where we should meet them’

Teachers too often forget that they won’t rally their students round to their point if they don’t join the students… they won’t win them over…

And that is precisely why reading takes on a new form here… in reading TOGETHER… students AND teachers… people who ‘don’t read’ will spontaneously read when reading together with others… a strong point to bear in mind when teaching !

The minute you invite readers in the ring they will join in… that’s why I strongly recommend teachers enlist their students in their reading sessions… and yet further beyond… readers will read when they are invited to share what they’re reading and what they think and how they feel about it…
